💡 How to pick a processor
What to look for:
  • Socket must match your motherboard (AM5 for new AMD, LGA1851 for new Intel)
  • Core count and clock speed for performance
  • TDP (wattage) affects cooling needs
💰 Budget builds: under $200. Mainstream gaming: $250-$400. Enthusiast: $500+

★★★★★A good Intel product
Great upgrade from an old trusty Sandy Bridge 2500K (which btw still runs). No overclocking this time around, but for a leap in performance this big, I had no desire to jump to the 14600K (much costlier at the time of my purchase in 2024). I use this for 1440p gaming and general PC multi-tasks (movies/music/photo editing/browsing). Paired with a 5060 Ti 16gb and 32gb DDR5 ram. In Red Dead Redemption 2 I’m getting a solid 80-90fps with ultra settings and DLSS quality, though it will drop in very busy cities but that’s more to do with the video card. I have not had any temperature issues. This CPU runs cool with a Scythe Mugen. Stable performance, no issues.

★★★★★Worked as expected, no issues.
Used this in a build for a Win 11 Computer with an ASROCK Z77 Lightning WIFI (PRO 4) motherboard. 5 stars based on my expectations. I'm not a gamer, I wasn't trying to build the biggest baddest rig in town, I just wanted something reliable, reasonably capable, power conscious and cost effective, I don't need to be on the bleeding edge. There were some concerns about compromised durability if you had a version before a certain BIOS release. More or a problem for the folks who purchased various Intel processors before the fix came out. I'm still using the W10 (older computer) as the primary, so most of the use has been getting the Win 11 computer set up as a replacement when support for W10 runs out and TurboTax will no longer support 10. It is noticeably faster than the 10700K I7 in the Win 10 system. Both have a similar set up, Raided M2's for the OS, Raided 2TB mechanical drives for data. Both use a RAM drive to store the majority of browser files (Chrome and Mozilla, haven't figure out a way to do it with Edge)

★★★★★Included CPU cooler is great if you know your motherboard is over-volting your CPU by default
This is a great product at a great price that runs cool with the included cooler. However, every motherboard manufacturer is now OVER VOLTING the CPUs causing them to run hotter and be less efficient so they can pass benchmarks with slightly higher scores at the cost of cooking your CPU. Look up the PL1 (long term power) and PL2 (short term power) ratings for your CPU and compare it to the massive over-volting your motherboard is doing to it without your knowledge or consent. In this case, the PL1 on a 14500 is 65w and the PL2 is 154w. My AsRock board was over-volting this to 219w+!!! No wonder it was cooking the CPU. This is not even an over-clockable CPU! There is a setting in the AsRock BIOS EZ screen to ENABLE INTEL POWER LIMITS, but it does not work! You need to go to advanced settings and find the long and short power limits and put them back MANUALLY to Intel's specifications. Now your chip will not over-heat, will cost less money to run, will last longer, be more reliable and you do NOT need to waste your money on more expensive coolers or thermal paste, nor waste your time installing and wiring all that up!!!!!!!

★★★★★It works great.
It works & it's fast. This was the fastest i5 that I could get at the time without getting an overclocked version.

★★★★★Cooler is inadequate.
The CPU works great, but it was constantly 90C-100C on light duty. Definitely buy an aftermarket cooler. The intel specs say 154watt power consumption on max load, so 150watt cooler may not be quite enough. I didn't want to take a chance and purchased a dual tower air cooler rated at +250w cooling. It runs very cool and quiet.
