Will It Fit? GPU & Case Clearance, Answered

Before you buy that big graphics card, make sure it physically fits. Here's exactly how to check GPU length, cooler height, and case clearance — the dimensions most builders forget.

FROM THE SHOPPlenty of customers bring me a beautiful new card that bumps the drive cage. Five minutes with the spec sheet saves a return shipment every time.

"Will this GPU fit my case?" trips up first-time and veteran builders alike, because modern graphics cards have grown enormous — many flagship cards are over 320mm long and occupy three or more slots. The good news: fit is a simple numbers game once you know which numbers to compare. This guide walks through GPU length, thickness, and cooler clearance so you never order a card that won't seat.

The one comparison that matters most

Every case publishes a maximum GPU length (graphics-card clearance) in millimetres. Every graphics card publishes its length. If the card's length is less than the case's clearance — with ~10–20mm of breathing room for cables — it fits. That's the core check. On Pro Rig Builder, both numbers appear on every case and graphics card page, so you can confirm fit in seconds.

Three clearances to verify

  • GPU length (mm) vs. case max GPU clearance — the make-or-break dimension
  • GPU slot width (2-slot, 2.5-slot, 3-slot) — thick cards block lower PCIe slots and need case depth
  • CPU cooler height (mm) vs. case max cooler height — air coolers especially; for AIOs, check radiator size support (120/240/280/360mm)

A quick worked example

Your case: max GPU clearance 360mm, max cooler height 165mm.

The card you want: 336mm long, 3-slot.

Verdict: 336mm < 360mm, so length is fine with ~24mm to spare. Confirm the 3-slot thickness doesn't cover a PCIe slot you need, and you're good to go. Always leave a margin for the power connectors at the end of the card.

Don't forget the rest of the build

Fit isn't only about the GPU. Your motherboard form factor (ATX, mATX, ITX) must match the case, your radiator needs a supported mount point, and your power supply must be the right length for the PSU bay. The PC Builder checks these automatically as you add parts, and if you're upgrading an existing machine, start by running the hardware scanner to capture your current case and motherboard.

The bottom line

Measure twice, buy once. Compare GPU length to case clearance, check slot width and cooler height, and leave a small margin. Do that and "will it fit?" stops being a gamble. Browse cases by GPU clearance and coolers by height on our PC cases and CPU coolers pages.

Frequently asked questions

Will my GPU fit in my case?
Compare your graphics card's length (in mm) to your case's maximum GPU clearance. If the card is shorter than the clearance, it fits. Also check height for thick triple-slot cards. Every case and GPU in our catalog lists these dimensions.
How do I know my case's maximum GPU length?
It's published in the case's spec sheet as 'max GPU length' or 'graphics card clearance' in millimetres. You'll find it on every case page in our catalog, and our scanner detects your case where possible.
Will a 3-slot GPU fit my motherboard?
Physically most will, but a 3-slot card covers the PCIe slots beneath it. Make sure you don't need those slots for a sound card, capture card, or Wi-Fi adapter, and confirm case width for the extra thickness.
Do I need to check cooler height too?
Yes. Air coolers have a height in mm that must be under your case's 'max CPU cooler height'. AIO liquid coolers need a radiator mount of the right size (120/240/280/360mm). Both are listed on our case and cooler pages.
What happens if a GPU is too long for the case?
It won't seat properly — it may hit the front fans, drive cage, or radiator. Some cases let you remove a drive cage to gain clearance, but always verify the numbers before buying rather than forcing a fit.
