★★★★★Great Affordable Wired HE Keyboard
I bought the J8 after doing hours of research on more affordable HE keyboards. Everyone’s comparison is to the Wooting 80HE when it comes to benchmarking HE keyboards due to their software and support. A lot of keyboard snobs will say the Wooting doesn’t sound great and you could get better switches to make is sound better but the responsiveness is still one of the best out there. I bought the Keychron for similar reasons as to having a reputable name with web software that is easy to understand and is natively in English. I was not disappointed. Could the keycaps, switches and stabilizers be better? I’m sure they could be but it sounds good with the closed bottom switches and is prelubed from the factory. There is very minimal key wobble and you could always swap the switches out for Jades if you felt necessary (I don’t). I have mine set pretty moderately with a 1mm travel on all keys with a .36mm rapid trigger and after getting used to it I’m loving the setup. The stock keycaps are decent but I wanted a set to match my superstrike, so I swapped them out for a XVX black and white shine through set. With the stock keycaps, I wasn’t sure how good the rgb lighting would be but with some shine through keycaps it looks better than I was expecting. If you’re interested in a HE keyboard, I would recommend this or the Keychron J2 (as they seem similar) over something like an mchose or other cheaper make.

★★★★★Why spend more?
I have multiple Keychron HE boards, and too many from other brands as well... all costing significantly more than this and some more than double. While reviewing this I just kept thinking, why spend more? Lets start with the look... fantastic, it comes with extra keys if for some reason you don't like the contrast look. You can see everything else included in the pictures... it's everything you need. Sound - it's up there with the best. This sounds much better than most HE boards by far. There are a few that sound better out of the box but, and especially for the price, this sound much better than most. I love the deep thock of the spacebar. As I touch type quickly, not having a good spacebar sound actually makes me type slower... something just throws me off then typing if it's not good. Keycaps of good, the exact quality you should expect at this price point, maybe a little better, they are PBT and won't wear out. Switches - FANTASTIC!!! Most of my Keychron HE boards have the older style HE switches, which I love. I have actually been reluctant to buy their most expensive board because it has these newer switches, that on paper looked to be too light for my tastes. I was wrong, these feel perfect! Not so light that you will press by accident when resting your finger during gaming but not heavy at all. Bottom line is they are joy to type on as well as use for those long 8 plus hour gaming sessions (you understand if you raid). Finally and the most important part of an HE board... the software. No you don't have to download some random questionable piece of software. The Keychron launcher website has everything you need AND it work great AND it's VERY easy to use. There is another HE brand that starts with a W and I loved their web based software, it was the reason to get their board. To me, the Keychron software just as good or better... the fact I have purchased multiple Keychron boards with my own money should be a testament to that. Login with a browser, make your changes and you are done. Connectivity is wired only... works for me, no reason to have 8K wireless IMHO. You are gaming, you want the lowest latency possible. One thing to note - there are different modes, the 3rd is the controller mode... no idea why they have this, I didn't find it useful but someone might. It didn't take anything away for me but didn't add anything either. Take a quick look on first time use to make sure you are set to the right mode if things seem odd. Bottom line - if you need a nice HE board without bloat, with excellent software from a reputable brand that will last? Just add to cart, purchase and be done. I have been using this board the past few week since I got it over an HE board that cost at least double the price, that has been on my desk for the previous 6 months and I see no reason to switch back. Yes it's that good... might just sell the other one.

★★★★★Two very minor gripes aside, I'm totally on board
Keychron's made some interesting keyboards, and they absolutely make a lot of them. Their magnetic Hall Effect switches make some of their models, like the J8 HE, stand out from the others. Unlike traditional switches, with their springs, domes or scissor-switches, these keys use magnets to determine the current depth of each key and can fire at programmable thresholds. That makes a big difference if you type quickly and don't always bottom out your keys. While the switches do produce a nice clean sound as you bottom out (though note it's *not* a click), they can register a key press at whatever depth you define using Keychron's excellent web configuration app. On another model of Hall Effect keyboard I had to customize the registration depth for the space bar because I wasn't pushing it down quite far enough for the default settings; on the J8 HE I'm finding no such issues. All the same it's still a great option to have, and if you're intending on using this keyboard for gaming where you want things to fire on a hair trigger, it's hard to beat these conceptually while still retaining general purpose usability. You can swap between three different profiles using a three-way switch tucked into the top-left corner of the board, so it's easy to define a "gaming" layout with hyper-responsive keys while still having a everyday profile. The keys feel excellent and the chassis feels nice and weighty. This is a lot heavier than most other TKL boards I've tried despite its 75% layout, so do bear that in mind if you intend to travel with this (outside of going to something like a gaming tournament where you're likely expecting a certain degree of weight). The knob is damped with clear detents and presses in with a satisfying click. I have absolutely no complaints on a build quality front. The only decisions that Keychron made that I'm not especially wild about are: 1) The programmable knob takes up a little more space than a single regular key, meaning that [end] got voted off the island in the default layout. I love being able to quickly change volume and other things with the dial, but I use [end] pretty regularly and would probably have rather had some multimedia functionality printed onto the function keys and get that valuable [end] key back. Remapping isn't super helpful here because I also need the other three navigation keys present in the right-hand column. 2) The backlighting is very flexible and looks quite nice, but the provided keycaps are not see-through, meaning that the backlights are visible only *around* the keys (in whatever various pattern you pick). That's not especially helpful if you need to use the keyboard in low light if you're not already familiar with where everything is. Just a minor nitpick since I know a lot of people like this style of backlight. Overall, a keyboard I really do recommend if the layout fits your needs.
