Honestly one of the best low profile keyboard Keychron has put out. I wish they had better switches but there are plenty of options out there.

Keychron does a good job with packaging and I'll start there. It's boxed nicely with a bunch of handy extras, along with printed guides and manuals. Out of the box it comes equipped with Mac keys but keycaps for Windows keys are included, as are a colored Enter key to match the orange Esc. Also included is a keycap puller, a screwdriver, and a decent 90° USB cable since the USB port is positioned on the side. Software is standard fare for Keychron, and that is a good thing. Launcher is web based so no download is required and it's super intuitive, anyone can use it to tweak their board to their liking. It's always a huge selling point for me with Keychron boards. Being low profile, this board is light. Moreso than I expected, having seen that this was aluminum and wood. Actually though, the bottom case, which makes up most of the assembly is completely plastic. The only aluminum on the board is the front and back edge of the top case, then of course the actual wood sides. This was a bit disappointing to me but then again I'm not too surprised based on the price. Even so, the aluminum feels good and this cuts down on the weight, which is probably a net positive on a low profile setup. The wood looks great as well with the deep color and nice finish. Overall it's a quality aesthetic, minimal and elegant. Connectivity is as good as all the other Keychron boards out there. You have the standard wired mode, then Bluetooth or wireless as options. Another feature this has is per key RGB which you can configure in the easy to use web software. These are north facing LEDs and if there was one weak point to this board, it would be that these are not very prominent even when turned to the max brightness. This is probably more to do with the profile of the keys. Not something that matters to me as I prefer to not use RGB, but worth considering. Also, this is a hotswap board. This means you could purchase whatever low profile switches you want out there to tweak your sound and feel. What really matters though is how a keyboard sounds and feels. I'm happy to say that this sounds and feels fantastic for a $100 low profile, actual mechanical board. With banana switches, it reminds me a lot of what I'd imagine a mechanical mac keyboard to be. You get that tactile bump with very little travel. It's a pleasant typing experience. It also sounds surprisingly good with my only issue being the right shift key. It's a bit rattled but I think this could be fixed with the stabilizer. But I'm picky, and I look for these things. It's quite silent too. Not completely silent, but I would say this is very suitable for an office environment, and easy to travel with to boot. Refer to my video for a typing demo and just realized that I'm micing this up with noise reduction so it'll probably sound louder than in a live environment with ambient noise. Okay, so a summary of my thoughts here - Pros: - A light and agile board - wonderful sound and feel - aluminum top case with actual wood sides - completely hotswapable - looks great - good connectivity options Cons: - underwhelming RGB - still mostly plastic with the bottom case - slight rattle on a single modifier key Overall a great board. It's probably the nicest sounding and feeling low profile I've used and given that it's hotswap, you could potentially go completely silent if you wanted with the right switches. Easily a recommendation if you are looking to test out a low profile or a quieter mechanical board.

I already own three Keychron keyboards, all of which are either Cherry or OSA profile and use full sized switches. Keychron is more expensive than the competition, but in my evaluation of over a dozen different keyboards, the premium is well worth it for the materials, build quality, and unique layouts. The K3 Max SE is no exception. What makes the K3 Max SE stand out is the low profile switches and keys. I had the chance to use a NuPhy Air75 V3 with brown switches, which is a highly rated low profile keyboard retailing around the $30 more than the K3 Max SE. I disliked the mushiness of the Air75’s brown switches and overall cheap feel of the plastic body. The Keychron on the other hand stands out with an impressive Banana switch that has a very prominent bump and is what a tactile switch should feel like. Additionally, the real wood and aluminum body of the K3 Max SE feels much more premium than the NuPhy. At 1.25lbs, this keyboard is light, much lighter than the Air75 (at 1.6lbs). There are a few things that surprised me that I would have preferred to be different: 1. Although the sides are wood and aluminum, the back tray is plastic. It would have been better if this was also aluminum. This was likely to accommodate the three different angle adjustments available, which is nice. 2. The switches and USB port are located on the left side of the keyboard, and aren’t particularly noteworthy in build - they are simple, black plastic toggles on a black body with black text. It would have been preferred to have the usb port on the top of the keyboard, and for the toggles to be better quality; right now because everything is black, it is a bit difficult to see. This is my biggest disappointment on the keyboard, and the reason I can’t give it a full 5 stars. 3. The north facing RGB lights and the opaque switch housing leave a lot to be desired for lighting. The backlight appears to be about half the brightness of a normal profile keyboard, such as the K2 HE All-Wood Edition that I also use. 4. At 120 hours of runtime, that is far lower than the Air75 V3’s 1200 hours. The typing experience of the K3 Max SE is exceptional. It is ergonomic, and has plenty of travel that makes it feel like a no-compromise device. I’ve tried Gateron BBKs, Jupiter Bananas, which are sometimes referred to as the best tactile switches you can get, but my main keyboard I use has Keychron Super Bananas on it for a reason. The low profile switches on the K3 Max SE feel great, just a step below the snappiness of the fullsize Super Bananas. It sounds good, but you aren’t going to get “thock” or even “clack” from this profile of keyboard. Keychron’s online launcher to customize keys is top tier and very easy to use. My personal preference is to use cherry profile keys and fullsize switches for my main desktop, and these low profile ones away from my desk with my iPad Pro. For those looking for a premium tactile experience, even at the desk, I would highly recommend considering this keyboard, as it is a pleasure to type on.

The Keychron K3 Max SE has been an outstanding upgrade for both work and everyday typing.
