1TB WD Red Plus NAS Internal Hard Drive - 5400 RPM Class, SATA 6 Gb/s, CMR

Used in a 24/7 mini server setup, used in a RAID configuration to mirror a primary drive. Working well, lower temperature than the primary drive and very quiet. So far, so good - time will tell about lifespan but I've never has bad luck with WD Red's. Installation was easy, drive was instantly recognized by the RAID controller so no issues. Performance is slow, this is not a good drive for a gaming machine or as a primary drive on a PC. You'd be better off with a faster drive, but for a data drive it is excellent. In my case in a 24/7 data server it serves perfectly.

Bought 4 of these for my QNAP SS-469 NAS (Yes in the UK they released a 2.5 model 469 model). During the 4-6 hour RAID 5 initialization of the 4 disks, Disk 1 in the array reached 43/c, and another of the disks reached 40/c (the other 2 disks only went as high as 37/c). Since then under normal operation in the QNAP, these disks run at 34c-37c during backups and syncs of 500gb+ file copies. Being only 9.5mm thick, they'll fit fine in any QNAP model that support 2.5 disks (which allow up to 12mm). Pleased with the speed of these drives running RAID 5, and they generate very little heat compared to the WD RED 3.5 disks. Only thing that would make me happier, would be a 2TB or 2.5TB model of this disk.

These 2.5" WD Red drives are reliable, cool, and quiet. They're not the fastest, but they're not meant to be. I think 3.5" NAS drives are silly when I can buy enterprise drives, which are the same but with higher endurance, for the same price. But in a 2.5" space, things are unfortunately still different, and WD would have a real winner if they offered higher capacity versions of this thing.

This is my first NAS system. It works perfectly along with my Synology DiskStation 4-Bay. I have a MAC and I can now back up both Macbook Pro's within my house without issues. I also utilize it for movies, music and home business applications. I also love it since it was fairly simple to connect my daughters iPad to it so she can watch movies. I have ran all three devices (2 laptops 1 iPad) with movies seamlessly and no interupptions. Perfect setup, well worth the money.

My reason for 3 stars on this is that the performance is quite poor once the drive starts to fill up. Why have these drives in my NAS if I can only expect good performance when they are less than 50% full? At 90% full, I'm seeing speeds around 30MBytes/sec. Copying data to and from these drives at that point is very annoying.
