★★★★★Everything You Need for a Professional Mod
I love that this comes as a complete kit. The included black heat pad and double-sided tape made the installation feel very secure. It fits snugly in the 2230 bay, and the build quality of the circuit board is top-notch—very stable connections with no crashes so far. I followed the advice to test the drive before fully closing up the case, and it worked on the first try. It’s a very satisfying DIY project that turns the Steam Deck into a high-capacity beast.

★★★★Works, but this is a “you better know what you’re doing” mod part.
This adapter does exactly what it claims: it lets you use a 2280 NVMe drive in a Steam Deck LCD that normally takes a 2230. The board fit and connector alignment were fine, and it recognized the SSD with no issue. That said, this kind of mod isn’t plug-and-play. Clearances inside the Steam Deck are tight, and adding a longer drive increases the chance of cable pressure, heat issues, or simply a bad fit depending on the SSD and how the adapter routes it. If you’re comfortable opening the Deck and you’ve already done SSD swaps, this can be a decent way to reuse a 2280 you already own. If you’re new to hardware mods, I’d strongly recommend sticking to a proper 2230 drive instead. Pros: does what it says, easy to seat, saves money if you already have a 2280 Cons: tight fit mod, potential thermal/clearance concerns, not beginner friendly.

★★★★★Works exactly as intended, but know why you’re doing it
Functionally, this earns five stars. It works. If you’re converting a Steam Deck LCD from a 2230 SSD to a 2280, this adapter does exactly what it’s supposed to do. Fitment was correct, alignment was clean, and once installed, the drive was recognized without issue. If you’re going this route, I’d recommend sticking with a known, properly manufactured adapter like this rather than rolling the dice on the absolute cheapest no-name listings floating around online. With something this close to your board and storage, you want consistent tolerances and clean traces. This one feels solid and well-made. That said, you do need to be comfortable opening your Steam Deck. You’ll need a proper plastic spudger after removing the screws, and you’ll hear some snapping as the shell tabs release. That’s normal. It will snap back into place during reassembly, but you shouldn’t attempt this if you’re uncomfortable carefully prying open consumer electronics. My only real hesitation isn’t about the adapter — it’s about market economics. There used to be a meaningful price gap between 2230 and 2280 NVMe drives. Right now, that gap is minimal in many cases. If you’re buying a drive specifically for this mod, you may end up breaking even versus just purchasing a larger 2230. This conversion makes the most sense if: — You already have a spare 2280 on hand — You’re upgrading with an existing drive from another build Otherwise, compare current pricing carefully before committing. If pricing returns to pre-crunch levels, disregard that caveat. Also worth noting: installing a 2280 via adapter requires careful placement and cable routing. It’s not as clean and direct as dropping in a right-sized 2230 and screwing it down. If you’re not comfortable opening the Deck at all, a high-quality microSD card remains a perfectly viable option for most use cases. At the Deck’s target resolutions and typical asset streaming patterns, good UHS-I cards perform surprisingly well for game storage — with the added benefit of being swappable and zero-risk to install. Bottom line: if you’ve got a spare 2280 and you’re comfortable opening your Deck, buy with confidence. If not, weigh current SSD pricing before going exotic. Just some guidance for fellow tinkerers: While the plastic tabs holding the deck together are resilient, they (like all similar snap-tight implementations) aren't designed for repeated decouplings, so if you have the hall effect stick-swap itch plan to do everything in one go.

★★★★★Weird design choices
I'm still rocking my LCD SD in 2026, so this was a great upgrade for me with 2230 SSDs no longer being affordable, and having more 2280s than I know what to do with. This mod was...weird. While the adapter does fit, it's a stiff PCB that extends across spots in the Steam Deck that are inflexible and sharp angled. I don't see this being a huge issue, but I would feel better if this were just a ribbon adapter of some kind. Also, the design anchors the PCB to the SD, but there's nowhere to anchor the 2280 while connected to the adapter! I had to use a thermal pad from an NVMe heat sink I wasn't using to basically wedge it in place against the backside of the case, and keep it from wiggling. It's honestly just kind of a weird design. It does work, I just wonder how many design passes they took to figure this one out, cause it surely can't be many.
