💡 How to pick storage
What to look for:
  • NVMe SSD for OS and games (fastest)
  • SATA SSD for budget storage
  • HDD for mass storage (photos, videos) at low cost
💰 Minimum 1TB NVMe for gaming. Add a 2TB+ HDD for media if needed

★★★★5 Stars for the 1TB (I got the 512GB)
So I'm only giving this 4 stars because, for the price difference, you REALLY should buy the 1TB (double the capacity for a slight bit more). Otherwise, this drive performs as expected without any problems for an OK price (the 1TB price is GREAT in comparison though). Being only 512GB, my plan is to either use this with a Pi5 or an external USB drive (maybe connected to my router as an on the go NAS). All my laptops and computers (even my N305 mini computer) have 1TB or larger in it. So ALL my tests here that you see were done via a USB drive (a really fast USB drive, but still...a USB drive). This means the results will be much slower than if you actually put this into a computer. Hopefully you'll read this without just looking at the pictures... Speed wise this performed as fast as any of my other NVMe drives in this particular USB drive enclosure. Being a Gen4, my USB will definitely be the limiter here so this was expected. But, keep in mind that the CrystalDiskMark results show a speed of 1070 MB/s for the large files which shows the maximum speed of the USB interface and enclosure. So...when you see the results of the H2testw which shows write speeds of 485 MB/s and 699 MB/s read speeds, this is SUSTAINED speeds for the entire drive regardless that it is being done on a USB drive. This is basically writing (and then reading) huge files to the entire drive (since it is used to do surface testing). That means these are the actual read and write speeds of the drive itself and not the cache which eventually fills up/runs out. The read and write speeds you see in CrystalDiskMark are mostly (if not all) the drive's cache performance. I ran CrystalDiskMark at both 1GiB and 8GiB. Both performed identical which means the drive has a good cache and most likely you'll never run across the lower speeds unless you are planning to do large sustained reads or writes. If you are...pay attention to those speeds instead of all the ones you keeps seeing which is the cache speeds since this is what you'll get regardless if it's in a USB enclosure or actually mounted to your motherboard. Quick note...came with a mount screw which I don't think any of my other NVMe drives did (even super expensive 4TB ones). Careful you don't lose it. Even if you don't need it, you probably will at some point (since, as noted, other ones usually don't come with one lol). Also formatted capacity is 476GB...but, keep in mind that is Windows reporting it in GiB (but just not actually showing it). If you look at the picture you'll see it shows 512,092,008,448 as the total capacity which translates to 512GB (so both are right, but wanted to point it out so you can see what the formatted capacity is in Windows).
